January 2011- Deferred Annual General Meeting

Alice, VJ, Katya, Julie, Pete, Tony, Norman and Liz. Apologies from Jo.

• Pete read the Chairman's report and overview of the year, in Jo's absence. A copy was distributed to those present.
• Norman presented the treasurers report. A copy was distributed to those present.

(If anyone who was absent from the meeting would like a copy of either of these, please contact Liz.)

Norman agreed to continue to be the treasurer for the group. Liz agreed to be the chairman/administrator for the group. (Thanks to Pete,Tony and others for offering support as and when needed. It probably will be!)

Congratulations to Pete, who swept the board for awards, winning both the B. Edwards trophy for best children's story, and the 'Silver Salver' for the person with the highest number of 'monthly story' votes. Well done Pete.

Housekeeping and Gossip:

Thank you Alice for kindly hosting this month's meeting. Interspersed with eating and drinking,- thanks everyone for the bring & share food - there were discussions about possible future liaisons with the Exeter Writers group. It was agreed that generally, we were open to offers!
We discussed having a children's story page on the website. Pete agreed to start us off by putting his winning story on. Using the stories we submitted for our in-house competition, we could 'fund' this page for a few months. Nothing has to be set in concrete. Let's see how it goes. A variety of seasonal snippets were read out...full house next month?

A warm welcome to VJ. We look forward to seeing you next month.

Look out for
• The Della Gorton Short Story Competition- on
• Amy Sparkes- Writing Children's Books- Thursday 20.01.2011-17.02.2011- (7pm-9pm at PETROC- Tiverton)
• Margaret James- workshop- (Information on the Creative Writing Matters site,
• 2011 Bristol Short story competition-
• Brighton Cow- (community of writers) short story competitions-

Tony mentioned further workshops by Clare George. I'm sure I have also seen something about a theme of Ice and Fire but can't track it down. If anyone can find any more information, please let me know and I can pass this round.

Katya mentioned a possible workshop/lecture by Jane Wenham-Jones in Paignton. Details for this can be found on or

Last but not least, Julie is planning to walk/climb Snowdon (not by the easy route either!) in aid of the Exeter Hospice and the Motor Neurone Disease Association. If you would like to sponsor her, or indeed meet her at the top with a bottle of something useful!, let her know at the next meeting.

Next Month:

The title for next month’s writing is ‘Moving On’.

If knowledge is power, then I'm a 10w bulb // Train station is where the train stops. Bus station is where the bus stops. Work station is...! // There is no right and wrong. There are just two people with two different oppinions.
